Background of the Study
Cancer remains a major public health concern globally, with early detection playing a critical role in reducing morbidity and mortality rates. Cancer screening programs help in the early identification of malignancies, enabling timely interventions that improve survival outcomes (World Health Organization, 2024). Nurse-led cancer screening programs have been recognized as effective strategies for increasing screening coverage, particularly in low-resource settings where there is a shortage of specialized physicians (Aliyu & Usman, 2023).
In Nigeria, the burden of cancer is on the rise, with breast, cervical, and prostate cancers being the most prevalent types (Bello et al., 2023). Adamawa State, like many other parts of the country, faces challenges in cancer diagnosis and treatment, as many patients present at late stages due to a lack of awareness and access to screening services (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). Nurse-led cancer screening programs have been introduced in various healthcare facilities to bridge this gap by providing community-based screening, health education, and early referral for treatment.
Despite the potential benefits of these programs, there is limited empirical evidence on their effectiveness in Adamawa State. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of nurse-led cancer screening initiatives, assess the level of participation, and identify challenges that may hinder the success of these programs.
Statement of the Problem
Cancer mortality rates in Nigeria remain high, primarily due to late diagnosis and inadequate screening services. While nurse-led cancer screening programs aim to improve early detection rates, their effectiveness has not been fully assessed in many regions, including Adamawa State (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023). Factors such as low community awareness, cultural beliefs, fear of cancer diagnosis, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure may limit the reach and success of these programs.
Without proper evaluation, it is unclear whether nurse-led screening initiatives are achieving their intended objectives in increasing cancer detection and reducing late-stage presentations. This study aims to address this gap by assessing the effectiveness of nurse-led cancer screening programs in Adamawa State and identifying areas for improvement.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led cancer screening programs in Adamawa State.
2. To assess the level of participation and community awareness of nurse-led cancer screening services.
3. To identify challenges affecting the implementation of nurse-led cancer screening programs and propose solutions.
Research Questions
1. How effective are nurse-led cancer screening programs in improving early cancer detection in Adamawa State?
2. What is the level of participation and awareness among community members regarding nurse-led cancer screening services?
3. What challenges hinder the successful implementation of nurse-led cancer screening programs?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurse-led cancer screening programs significantly improve early cancer detection rates in Adamawa State.
2. Low community awareness negatively impacts participation in nurse-led screening programs.
3. Addressing logistical and resource-related challenges will enhance the effectiveness of nurse-led cancer screening programs.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurse-led cancer screening programs in selected healthcare facilities in Adamawa State. Limitations may include variations in screening program implementation across different communities and potential difficulties in obtaining participant data.
Definition of Terms
